Going so slow

ALL my costumes have been going so slow this year 😦 it’s always one thing or another, and when nothing is happening I’m hit with a excutiating case of laziness.

It seems I can’t get anything done.

After getting sick at the end of last year, then getting lazy, then my dog getting sick… And me not doing anything besides stay next to him cuddling when I was home… I completely stopped work on my shadows trooper!

Then when I was inspired I decided to work on Zarina for Connecticon.

I did have plenty of time to finish it…. But got busy with working extra hours, events almost every weekend… And just working on it in between.

Then a full weekend of sewing was ahead of me 2 weeks ago and I got sick again and barely got out of bed.

😦

Life does get in the way… One way or another and it sucks!

😦

But this past weekend I did work a lot on it.

Here are some progress pictures.

I’m using the same pattern I’ve seen people using for Princess Ana’s top. It’s a nice pattern and I like it because it seems to be long enough to not be popping out from under the belt. Some corset patterns are sort of short, no idea why. But this one is great!!!

I love this fabric too! I got it at Joann’s and honestly I only got it because I had 2 really good coupons, cause this one was way over my budget!

The fabric was super nice but that meant I had to make my own bias tape! It was sort of a pain cause to actually make it you have to use an iron, and I can’t iron it straight on the fabric! I used a piece of tissue paper and went very slowly to not melt it.

But looook!!!!!!! It looks soooooooo nice doesn’t it?!?

Sure, of course, because I rather do everything the slow way, I hand sewed the back of the bias tape just to make sure it was perfect and nice looking! Lining and channels for the boning. I’m using plastic ones on this. I know it’s not the most indicated, but I’m using the steel ones I have left on the new Wonder Woman corset I made. I definitely wear Wonder Woman way more than ANYTHING else I have so it needs a really good upgrade. And honestly I didn’t want to spend money on more steel boning!

Unfortunately I had to spend more money on the plastic ones lol I thought I had enough but ran out of it. It was already Sunday afternoon… Weekend almost over.

So I just put the eyelets on the back and was done for the weekend.

I have a week off coming up so I am hoping I can finish everything. Otherwise Zarina will not show up at Connecticon 😦

A failure :(

Last night I sat down to finish up the wings! I thought I had read enough tutorials online, I had gathered all the materials and was more than ready!

Yeah! Sure!

First, when I went to buy the film (again!! cause I had already bought the wrong one) I was staring at them at the store and had to open a little bit of the package in one to take a peek of the color of it.

Of all tutorials I’ve read people forgot to mention the color.

Yeah! Because in my ignorance I thought that iridescent meant this nice effect on a clear film.

WRONG!

Iridescent film has MANY colors.

This one is called OPAL!

So I got the opal film and went back home all happy and ready. I set everything down. I cut a larger piece of film for the wing section because when I tried ironing a small section of film it seemed to shrink a bit. So to be safe, I cut a larger one.

Make a sandwich: film on the bottom, wing base in the middle and film on top!

What tutorials don’t mention either is that you should turn off the steam in your iron.

My iron is a bit of a pain. It doesn’t have a button to turn off the steam. I have to take the water off! (Quite a pain in the a$$ when I’m working with fabrics that I need to alternate steam and no steam.)

So my first attempt, with steam on, the 2 sheets of film didn’t quite adhere to each other!

I dumped the water and tried again!

You know how it goes! Don’t iron straight onto the film. It will melt all over your iron! 😱

Use a piece of fabric.

Tutorials I read also failed to mention that it will take some time. But you have to be careful. Because if you leave it for too long it will melt.

It’s a lot of guessing game!

Also, I thought that using 2 sheets of the film intesified the color a lot!

In this last picture I wasn’t sure if it was the lighting in my apartment or what! But it looked way too pink for my taste!

I kind of wondered if I should use one opal and one clear. It would probably help minimize this pink!

But I stuck with what I had learned from the tutorials.

Some tutorials I read people used the iron again on the edges. Some used a heat gun.

I tried the iron and it didn’t work very well. It was taking too long.

So I tried the heat gun. My faster but still not quite.

Also I learned the hard way, that you have to keep the heat gun moving constantly. If it stays on the same spot on the film for too long it kind of changes the color of it, and takes the shine away.

I didn’t photographed the end results. Because it looked awful! 😭

I think the frame for the wings came out beautifully. Much better than I ever imagined I’d be able to do for my first time working with wires and soldering.

So it was so frustrating to see it looking so awful with the films on 😭😭

I’m B didn’t even want to look at it.

So I put it away and went to sleep!

This morning when I woke up I just tore the film off of it! It looked even worse in the morning light! 😟

I’m going to try something different now.

I also think I’m going to paint the frame silver. Like a shinier silver, to make stand a bit more through the film.

I’m also going to try the opal and the clear films together. Hopefully it will look lighter and more delicate!!!

I have a little less than 2 months now. It shouldn’t be a problem but I’ve been so lazy with costumes lately that I KNOW if I’m not careful I won’t finish it in time.

And I still have t figured out how I’m gonna make the sword! 😳

Wow!

It’s been 6 months already?!? Damn!
Time is just going to fast! And my lack of updates in this blog kind of have a good reason!

Kind of!

This year started well! New Legion costume project!!!! SHADOW TROOPER!

I’ve been wanting to do another 501st armor costume for quite some time, but I just couldn’t make up my mind.

At the end of last year I finally did!!!

Got my kit as a Xmas gift for myself and started the year right!!!!!!

But then I took a break! I was doing so well and going so fast and then I lost my motivation somewhere over there.
Listen! I have to drill 2 holes into that pretty helmet of mine and I’m freaking out. So I just stopped everything!

And then! My dog got sick. 😦

What a nightmare. All I did was take care of him and cry.

Costumes were definitely NOT my priority.

He got better! Thank God! But I still haven’t found the motivation I need!

😦

I’m trying.

Doing some scout work here and there and some fairy designs so I can get started on Zarina! Especially now that I found a tinkerbell!!!! ☺️ (my friend Brie)

The wings were not as hard to draw but I have to confess. I couldn’t find a clear picture of zarina’s wings. As you know fairy wings are unique. Like… Fingerprints of sorts (although periwinkle and Tinkerbell have the same – they are sisters) so it is very important for me to get zarina’s wings right and not just use a generic one.

I looked everywhere. Couldn’t find it.

I didn’t watch the movie again! Maybe I could find more details there and screen cap it or something.

Oh well.

The only place I could find some details was on pictures of Zarina’s doll!

Still not very good but it was the best I could find.

Another thing I don’t understand when I see fairy cosplayers out there is the size of the wings.

They are usually very small, but I wanted to make them proportional for my size. You know what I mean!
For example. Look at her wings.

See how much they go above her head?

That’s how I want it on me! That much above my head! Proportional to my size!!!! So yeah! They will be big wings. When I drew them larger the actual design inside changed a bit. It was much easier to follow her patterns inside the longer wings!

I’m excited to make them and the design came out looking ok.

It’s the first time I make wings like that! And I love making things for the first time.

πŸ™‚

She also has that design on her skirt.

I stared at it forever trying to understand it so I could replicate it.

Omg 😳😳😳😳

Thank you VERY MUCH Christin Siriano! 😳 damn!

I stared at that thing for days. FOR REALS!

I finally got it. I THINK!

I won’t show it now! Just when it’s done cause I think painted in the right colors will make it look even better.
Next step is drafting the skirt. I’ve seen many costumes out there. Great ones. But none of them reflect the way the skirt actually is on the movie. Even Sirianos life size costume they had on exhibition somewhere! The skirt is nowhere even close to the one in the movie.

Does it mean it’s impossible to make it like that??????

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!!!

Lol

I hope to have Zarina ready for Hartford ComiCONN.

Fingers crossed!!!!
