It’s a wrap!Β

So yep!

Con season is over! And it ended with a bang!!!!

A good one that is!

RICC was this past weekend and it was amazing!

I was super busy all weekend long… so busy I barely saw the con itself apart from walking an hour or so on Sunday!

I did get Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s autograph on Saturday, thanks to a good friend Javier Rosado and his wife Omayra. They bought the auto before the con and didn’t realize it was for Saturday! Since they were attending the con only in Sunday, they gave the auto tkt to me!

YEEEEY!

I was sooo soooo happy! That was the only autograph I actually wanted but with the  possibility of having to move soon, I just couldn’t justify spending $85 on a scribble! (Very special scribble! But still!)

So when Javier told me I could have it I literally danced up and down on my bed!!!! Lol

It was insane to actually get the autograph. There was apparently 400 people on his line and I had just 20 minutes before I had to be lining up people for the contest!

😳😳😳😳😳😳😳

But thanks to very understanding people I was able to get the autograph! And I even got a hug and a kiss from Jeffrey!

If you know me, you know I don’t fan girl very often! I can count on one hand thebtimes I did it and this was def one of them!!!!

IT WAS DENNY DUQUETTE!!!!

Of all people I never ever imagined I’d meet him and although I did quit the walking dead, I do have to thank the show. If it wasn’t for it I don’t think JDM would ever do signings at a con! So yep! Thanks TWD!!!!!

The costume contests, both kids and adults went well! Thank goodness! The after party was super fun!!!! I just wish I had more time tΓ΄ Hang out with friends!!!! But thanks ok!

I am actually con season is over. Even though I haven’t done many cons this year, I’m glad to  Just stay home and not have to worry about cons and costumes. (Even if I’m already planning ComiCONN in my head! lol FOXWOODS HERE WE COME!!!)

But for. I will just be home and relax with my pup!!!!

Oh… yeah! But I do need to fix my wings! And finish my scout!

Oh! And I need to work on my secret costume for celebration!

Oh well! There’s no rest for the wicked! Lol

Here are some of the pics I took this weekend.

I didn’t take many! Well actually these are all the picture I took hahah too busy to even get my phone out for a pic! Lol

And me! Busy at work!!!

No excusesΒ

Yep!

I have no excuses what so ever!

2016 has been the slowest year for me so far since I started costuming.

I could give you plenty of excuses.

– my dog getting sick in the beginning of the year threw me off. I reduced the number of cons I attended this year to just cons I am working at. And I didn’t dress up.

– I got lazy. No motivation at all. Just could NOT find it.

– didn’t want to spend money on costumes. So the options I had were costumes I already had the materials.

– the little motivation I was able to find got lost pretty quickly every time I got stuck in some part of the costume.

Alright! Alright! These are not excuses. I’m just whining.

Lol

But I did have a lot on my plate this year and every time I was home and had some free time, all I wanted to do was relax and cuddle with my pup!

And time just freaking FLEW by! And now the year is almost over.

Thanks to Super Megafest, the only con I attended for fun, I was able to find enough motivation to finish Zarina.

But first, of course, I got stuck! Lol

So I sat down to work on the sword.

I read somewhere that this girl made the sword completely out of worbla scraps. Of course there was no tutorial, but I was like… hey I have worbla. I can do it!

Yeah?

Noooooo!

It started pretty ok I thing! I designed the shape from scratch and there we go!

😳😳😳😳

Nope! Didn’t work! Scratch that!

Try again!

Nope!

One more time!

Nope!

I got a good looking shape and then I just couldn’t get it smooth 😒

Then I talked to a friend who’s the foam armor master. Got some tips, and tried with just foam! That would be easier to get it smooth right?

Right! But I wasn’t able to get it in a good shape!

Garbage!

I gave up.

I had ordered a plastic one from a kids costume accessory thingie. It was too small of course but that was better than nothing.

I cut the Z and added to the “stick” I had made.

I painted silver and voila. Completely disproportional, but better than nothing.

Solution for the future?

Commission a 3D print of it!

After painting the skirt and having the pieces laying around my living room for. I this I finally sewed it together.

That was the last piece that needed to be sewn.

At this point I was running against time.

The con was a week away and because I had been stuck with the sword, I still had quite a few details to make!

The earring and bracelet were easy and quick but the earrings are missing 2 blue beads each. I just couldn’t find beads that were a good size but had a large hole to actually got through the earrings. Oh well.

They will be mostly hidden under my hair anyways.

Oh and that’s another reason why I’m not getting the ears.

No one will see them anyways.

I had decided to make the belt out of pieces of wood and use 3D puffy paint for the details.

Well first attempt didn’t work. I made the mistake of covering the pieces of wood with gesso and sanded the crap out of it.

But still didn’t get it smooth enough! 😦

Then I did it again. No gesso. Just sanded the wood, covered with shlac and AWESOME!

I painted first then added the details. The 3D paint dried to match the spray paint perfectly. πŸ™‚ yey so happy.

I had to wait for the 3D paint to dry really well tho. It kept glueing to the pieces wherever they touched.

And with almost everything done and out of the way I got the wings out ready to give it the last details.

Omg can I tell you how much I wanted to cry?????

The wings wouldn’t stay up! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Omg 😲 Just wanted to die.

SMF was 3 days away and my wings weren’t working.

I knew exactly where the problem was so I sat down to fix it and!!!!!

Almost chopped my finger off.

😭😭😭😭😭😭

How to work on a costume when your finger won’t stop bleeding????

2 days to go! No finger and no wings.

HOW CAN YOU BE A FAIRY WITH NO WINGS??????

Then just because I wasn’t behind enough, why. It make something else? Sounds good to me!

Blue pixie dust in a jar coming right up!

Lol

If you don’t know the story, Zarina was a Dust Keeper fairy and she leaves Pixi Hollow after a dust mishap and becomes a pirate. She is the captain in Hooks ship actually, intends the make pixie dust to help the pirates do pirate things. She goes back to Pixie hollow and steals the blue dust (what they use to make pixie Dust. The whole movie is basically about the dust that she carries in a bag. How can I not have that?????

Painting glass with midge podge.

I couldn’t find the tiny little led lights so I got snowflakes for now.

Missed my deadline

So Conencticon was today and I didn’t even go. Yep I missed my deadline 😦

This week wasn’t very productive.

I got stuck draping the skirt and spent more time cursing Christian Siriano (from Project Runway and the guy who designed Zarina’s outfit. Damn you Siriano! Couldn’t it be just a straight forward skirt?!?!?! ) than actually getting somewhere with it.

After a massive waste of muslin trying to replicate the skirt and gave up and decided to make it just ‘close enough’.

Doesn’t make me happy at all, I’ll tell you that! 😦

But I have my fingers crossed that it will look different once in the correct fabric. (A lot thinner and more flowy than the muslim)

So this week i draped the skirt (as I mentioned many many times) then as soon as I was kind of ok with it I transferred it all to paper.

Then I watched the pirate fairy movie again and decided there’s something missing. I’m going to make the basic part of the skirt then I’ll manipulate some extra fabric on it to see if I can get that right.

Also the wig arrived this week but only today I felt like cutting  it. The wig is sooo nice. And lots of hair. Nice and full…. And longer than I needed it. I felt so bad cutting it!

But most of my vacation week was spent being lazy and playing Lego The Force Awakens! I totally blame this game. I know I shouldn’t have bought it this week, but what can I say???? I just love Lego Games!! Lol

Going so slow

ALL my costumes have been going so slow this year 😦 it’s always one thing or another, and when nothing is happening I’m hit with a excutiating case of laziness.

It seems I can’t get anything done.

After getting sick at the end of last year, then getting lazy, then my dog getting sick… And me not doing anything besides stay next to him cuddling when I was home… I completely stopped work on my shadows trooper!

Then when I was inspired I decided to work on Zarina for Connecticon.

I did have plenty of time to finish it…. But got busy with working extra hours, events almost every weekend… And just working on it in between.

Then a full weekend of sewing was ahead of me 2 weeks ago and I got sick again and barely got out of bed.

😦

Life does get in the way… One way or another and it sucks!

😦

But this past weekend I did work a lot on it.

Here are some progress pictures.

I’m using the same pattern I’ve seen people using for Princess Ana’s top. It’s a nice pattern and I like it because it seems to be long enough to not be popping out from under the belt. Some corset patterns are sort of short, no idea why. But this one is great!!!

I love this fabric too! I got it at Joann’s and honestly I only got it because I had 2 really good coupons, cause this one was way over my budget!

The fabric was super nice but that meant I had to make my own bias tape! It was sort of a pain cause to actually make it you have to use an iron, and I can’t iron it straight on the fabric! I used a piece of tissue paper and went very slowly to not melt it.

But looook!!!!!!! It looks soooooooo nice doesn’t it?!?

Sure, of course, because I rather do everything the slow way, I hand sewed the back of the bias tape just to make sure it was perfect and nice looking! Lining and channels for the boning. I’m using plastic ones on this. I know it’s not the most indicated, but I’m using the steel ones I have left on the new Wonder Woman corset I made. I definitely wear Wonder Woman way more than ANYTHING else I have so it needs a really good upgrade. And honestly I didn’t want to spend money on more steel boning!

Unfortunately I had to spend more money on the plastic ones lol I thought I had enough but ran out of it. It was already Sunday afternoon… Weekend almost over.

So I just put the eyelets on the back and was done for the weekend.

I have a week off coming up so I am hoping I can finish everything. Otherwise Zarina will not show up at Connecticon 😦

A failure :(

Last night I sat down to finish up the wings! I thought I had read enough tutorials online, I had gathered all the materials and was more than ready!

Yeah! Sure!

First, when I went to buy the film (again!! cause I had already bought the wrong one) I was staring at them at the store and had to open a little bit of the package in one to take a peek of the color of it.

Of all tutorials I’ve read people forgot to mention the color.

Yeah! Because in my ignorance I thought that iridescent meant this nice effect on a clear film.

WRONG!

Iridescent film has MANY colors.

This one is called OPAL!

So I got the opal film and went back home all happy and ready. I set everything down. I cut a larger piece of film for the wing section because when I tried ironing a small section of film it seemed to shrink a bit. So to be safe, I cut a larger one.

Make a sandwich: film on the bottom, wing base in the middle and film on top!

What tutorials don’t mention either is that you should turn off the steam in your iron.

My iron is a bit of a pain. It doesn’t have a button to turn off the steam. I have to take the water off! (Quite a pain in the a$$ when I’m working with fabrics that I need to alternate steam and no steam.)

So my first attempt, with steam on, the 2 sheets of film didn’t quite adhere to each other!

I dumped the water and tried again!

You know how it goes! Don’t iron straight onto the film. It will melt all over your iron! 😱

Use a piece of fabric.

Tutorials I read also failed to mention that it will take some time. But you have to be careful. Because if you leave it for too long it will melt.

It’s a lot of guessing game!

Also, I thought that using 2 sheets of the film intesified the color a lot!

In this last picture I wasn’t sure if it was the lighting in my apartment or what! But it looked way too pink for my taste!

I kind of wondered if I should use one opal and one clear. It would probably help minimize this pink!

But I stuck with what I had learned from the tutorials.

Some tutorials I read people used the iron again on the edges. Some used a heat gun.

I tried the iron and it didn’t work very well. It was taking too long.

So I tried the heat gun. My faster but still not quite.

Also I learned the hard way, that you have to keep the heat gun moving constantly. If it stays on the same spot on the film for too long it kind of changes the color of it, and takes the shine away.

I didn’t photographed the end results. Because it looked awful! 😭

I think the frame for the wings came out beautifully. Much better than I ever imagined I’d be able to do for my first time working with wires and soldering.

So it was so frustrating to see it looking so awful with the films on 😭😭

I’m B didn’t even want to look at it.

So I put it away and went to sleep!

This morning when I woke up I just tore the film off of it! It looked even worse in the morning light! 😟

I’m going to try something different now.

I also think I’m going to paint the frame silver. Like a shinier silver, to make stand a bit more through the film.

I’m also going to try the opal and the clear films together. Hopefully it will look lighter and more delicate!!!

I have a little less than 2 months now. It shouldn’t be a problem but I’ve been so lazy with costumes lately that I KNOW if I’m not careful I won’t finish it in time.

And I still have t figured out how I’m gonna make the sword! 😳

Wings people! WINGS

So I kind of lied!

Kind of!

Lol

My next step on My Zarina wasn’t drafting the skirt, but working on the wings.

I’m just too excited about these wings because like I said, I love working on things I’ve  never done before.

I decided to make the wings with wire instead of poster board for the frame. As much as I think the ones with paper are super pretty and well done, I wanted to do it with wire.

Last year when i started gathering materials for this I ended up buying wire 16! I always get confused with the Gauge of wire. The highest the thinner right?!?

So i don’t know! I bought it on amazon when I got the film for it as well. When it arrived I realized it was too thick. It would make some pretty sturdy wings but!!!! It would be way too hard to work on! 😦

I ended up “archiving” that project for a few months until a couple of weeks ago when I went to Walmart and saw the wires!

This time around I could touch it and bend it and decide for myself what gauge would be better.

I got 18. I’ve seen some tutorials out there with 18 for the outer frame and 20 for the inside details. But I figured 18 was just fine.

I got a solder thingie too.

I’ve never used that thing before.

I got a simple, craft one from Michaels. It comes with 2 tips, the thingie to melt, and some cooper thingie they use for glass thingies!

(COME ON PEOPLE!!! Aren’t you super impressed with my vast knowledge of THINGIE terms????? Lol sorry. I honestly don’t remember the names of all those “thingies” lol I’m still learning!!!!)

Even tho it’s like a simple one just for craft I think it’s perfect for what I need!!!!

I got a big cardboard trifold because I just didn’t have a big piece laying around 😦 had to buy it!

But, important tip here!!! Transferring your design to the cardboard is the best. Gives a nice, flat and sturdy surface to work the wire on!

I read lots of tutorials about making wings. And I watched many YouTube videos about how to solder, and yesterday I decided I was ready!!!!

I taped the wire down as I shaped it. There’s no way in heavens and earth that I could do this without taping it down.

And then I soldered it almost every time I put a piece down. Unless they were many smaller pieces.

Then I lay them all in place and taped them, then I soldered them.

I have to say! The whole process was much easier than I thought. And a lot of fun to make it as well.

I did burn my fingers a lot. But that’s because I’m stupid. Like, this is the easiest way to teach dumb people about heat conduction. Seriously!

It isn’t even that I don’t know about it…. But still, dumb brain is forgetful and I would just touch the damn wire anyways. Lol

By the end of one side of the wings I just literally could NOT stand the pain on my fingers. πŸ˜”

I am so so happy with how it turned out! Definitely much much better than I expected for my first try.

I will probably solder a bit on the other side as well, just to make sure it’s really good.

To tell you the truth I don’t know if it needs it or if it will actually make it better, but in my mind, my crazy logic, it makes sense.

Lol

With my new crazy schedule at work, troops almost every weekend, and my dog still acting a bit weird from time to time, I’m not quite sure when I’m going to find time to get back to this. But I hope it will be soon!

Wow!

It’s been 6 months already?!? Damn!
Time is just going to fast! And my lack of updates in this blog kind of have a good reason!

Kind of!

This year started well! New Legion costume project!!!! SHADOW TROOPER!

I’ve been wanting to do another 501st armor costume for quite some time, but I just couldn’t make up my mind.

At the end of last year I finally did!!!

Got my kit as a Xmas gift for myself and started the year right!!!!!!

But then I took a break! I was doing so well and going so fast and then I lost my motivation somewhere over there.
Listen! I have to drill 2 holes into that pretty helmet of mine and I’m freaking out. So I just stopped everything!

And then! My dog got sick. 😦

What a nightmare. All I did was take care of him and cry.

Costumes were definitely NOT my priority.

He got better! Thank God! But I still haven’t found the motivation I need!

😦

I’m trying.

Doing some scout work here and there and some fairy designs so I can get started on Zarina! Especially now that I found a tinkerbell!!!! ☺️ (my friend Brie)

The wings were not as hard to draw but I have to confess. I couldn’t find a clear picture of zarina’s wings. As you know fairy wings are unique. Like… Fingerprints of sorts (although periwinkle and Tinkerbell have the same – they are sisters) so it is very important for me to get zarina’s wings right and not just use a generic one.

I looked everywhere. Couldn’t find it.

I didn’t watch the movie again! Maybe I could find more details there and screen cap it or something.

Oh well.

The only place I could find some details was on pictures of Zarina’s doll!

Still not very good but it was the best I could find.

Another thing I don’t understand when I see fairy cosplayers out there is the size of the wings.

They are usually very small, but I wanted to make them proportional for my size. You know what I mean!
For example. Look at her wings.

See how much they go above her head?

That’s how I want it on me! That much above my head! Proportional to my size!!!! So yeah! They will be big wings. When I drew them larger the actual design inside changed a bit. It was much easier to follow her patterns inside the longer wings!

I’m excited to make them and the design came out looking ok.

It’s the first time I make wings like that! And I love making things for the first time.

πŸ™‚

She also has that design on her skirt.

I stared at it forever trying to understand it so I could replicate it.

Omg 😳😳😳😳

Thank you VERY MUCH Christin Siriano! 😳 damn!

I stared at that thing for days. FOR REALS!

I finally got it. I THINK!

I won’t show it now! Just when it’s done cause I think painted in the right colors will make it look even better.
Next step is drafting the skirt. I’ve seen many costumes out there. Great ones. But none of them reflect the way the skirt actually is on the movie. Even Sirianos life size costume they had on exhibition somewhere! The skirt is nowhere even close to the one in the movie.

Does it mean it’s impossible to make it like that??????

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!!!

Lol

I hope to have Zarina ready for Hartford ComiCONN.

Fingers crossed!!!!
